Take the Long Way to Dinner

The Wagon Train brings together the simple pleasures of historic rail travel: the sound of a steam locomotive at work, a leisurely journey through remote mountain scenery, live music and a shared meal at Osier Station.

The journey begins in Colorado’s high desert at the Antonito Depot. From there, Locomotive No. 463 leads a vintage train north through wide-open landscapes, historic railroad communities and remote sections of the line rarely reached by road.

After an operating stop at Sublette, the train continues to Osier Station, where guests will gather for a hearty dinner prepared by From the Wagon. Live music by local Western singer-songwriter Fred Hargrove will bring an easygoing, communal spirit to the experience.

The return journey takes place during the evening hours, offering a different perspective on the railroad as the train travels back toward Antonito beneath the changing mountain sky.

Travel Behind Locomotive No. 463

The Wagon Train will be powered by historic steam locomotive No. 463 with a vintage consist selected for this special excursion.

The planned train includes historic passenger coaches, a Railway Post Office car, an open-air gondola and other vintage railroad equipment. The consist also includes onboard restroom facilities.

Train Car Information

Limited-Capacity Vintage Consist

The Wagon Train is limited to approximately 90 passengers, creating a more intimate atmosphere than many regularly scheduled excursions.

Guests may have opportunities to move between designated passenger areas during the journey, including the open-air gondola when weather and operating conditions allow.

Historic railroad equipment may have:

  • Narrow aisles
  • Steps between platforms and cars
  • Uneven surfaces
  • Limited climate control
  • Traditional bench or coach seating
  • Restricted accessibility in certain areas

Guests should follow all crew instructions when moving through the train.

Open-Air Gondola

Ride in the open air and experience the sights, sounds and movement of the railroad up close. The gondola offers sweeping views of the high desert, mountain scenery and historic railroad landscape. It’s ideal for guests who want a more immersive and adventurous ride.

Because the gondola is open to the elements, guests should dress in warm layers and be prepared for wind, changing temperatures, smoke, soot and possible light precipitation.

Coach Car

Coach seating provides a more traditional passenger-train experience with an enclosed interior and protection from the elements. Guests can relax in historic railroad surroundings while enjoying the scenery through the windows during the afternoon journey and evening return.

Check-In Details

Please arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.
