The Wagon Train is a one-day special experience combining historic rail travel, live Western music and a hearty dinner at remote Osier Station. Departing from Antonito, Colorado, historic Locomotive No. 463 will lead a vintage passenger consist through the high desert and into remote railroad country accessible by few roads.
Along the journey, San Luis Valley singer-songwriter and cowboy poet Fred Hargrove brings an authentic Western soundtrack aboard the train, drawing on decades of performing, storytelling and life in the West.

Western music and railroading come together aboard The Wagon Train with San Luis Valley’s own Fred Hargrove.
A singer-songwriter, cowboy poet and longtime Western entertainer, Hargrove is no stranger to performing on the rails. He previously served as a host and emcee for the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad concert series, welcoming and entertaining passengers aboard another of the San Luis Valley’s celebrated railroad experiences.
Hargrove also spent 14 years traveling and opening for legendary Western singer-songwriter Michael Martin Murphey, bringing his music to audiences across the country.
His original music has earned recognition within the Western music community. His album My Sacred Ground was nominated for 2010 Album of the Year by the Western Music Association, while the original song “Code of the West” received a 2011 Song of the Year nomination.
Hargrove’s music and storytelling are rooted in ranch life, horses, the land and the people and traditions of the American West. That connection is personal: over the years, he has run ranches in Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico.
On The Wagon Train, Fred brings those songs and stories back to the rails for a one-of-a-kind onboard performance that feels right at home with a steam locomotive, vintage railroad cars and the wide-open landscapes of Southern Colorado.
After traveling deep into the railroad’s remote mountain territory, The Wagon Train arrives at Osier Station for a delicious meal prepared by From the Wagon.
The menu is planned specifically for this special event. Guests with food allergies or dietary restrictions should contact the railroad before booking.

The Wagon Train will be powered by historic steam locomotive No. 463 with a vintage consist selected for this special excursion.
The planned train includes historic passenger coaches, a Railway Post Office car, an open-air gondola and other vintage railroad equipment. The consist also includes onboard restroom facilities.
The Wagon Train is limited to approximately 90 passengers, creating a more intimate atmosphere than many regularly scheduled excursions.
Guests may have opportunities to move between designated passenger areas during the journey, including the open-air gondola when weather and operating conditions allow.

Ride in the open air and experience the sights, sounds and movement of the railroad up close. The gondola offers sweeping views of the high desert, mountain scenery and historic railroad landscape. It’s ideal for guests who want a more immersive and adventurous ride.
Because the gondola is open to the elements, guests should dress in warm layers and be prepared for wind, changing temperatures, smoke, soot and possible light precipitation.
Coach seating provides a more traditional passenger-train experience with an enclosed interior and protection from the elements. Guests can relax in historic railroad surroundings while enjoying the scenery through the windows during the afternoon journey and evening return.

Weather can change quickly in the mountains. Conditions may be warm in Chama and considerably cooler at Cumbres Pass, Osier Station and during the evening return.
Guests with mobility concerns or other accessibility needs should contact us before booking. Our reservations team can discuss boarding procedures, available accommodations and the movement required between the train and Osier Station.
Not all historic railroad equipment or areas of Osier Station offer the same level of accessibility, so advance coordination is strongly recommended.
Trip Protection may be added during online checkout for 8% of the reservation total. Trip Protection must be purchased when the original reservation is made and cannot be added later.
Reservations With Trip Protection
Guests may cancel or change their reservation up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure. Refunds exclude the Trip Protection fee and applicable processing fees.
Changes are subject to availability and any difference in ticket price.
Reservations Without Trip Protection
One complimentary change to another available excursion may be requested up to 24 hours before departure. Additional changes are subject to a $20 change fee plus any difference in ticket price.
Because the Wagon Train is a one-day special event, an equivalent replacement departure may not be available.

No changes, cancellations or refunds are available within 24 hours of the scheduled departure, regardless of whether Trip Protection was purchased.
Trip Protection fees and processing fees are nonrefundable.
