A Classic Mountain Steam Journey from Chama

Experience the magic of historic narrow-gauge railroading on the Chama Limited, a scenic steam train excursion that travels half the C&TSRR line and climbs deep into the San Juan Mountains before returning to Chama. Perfect for families, photographers, rail enthusiasts, and travelers seeking an unforgettable Rocky Mountain adventure, this classic round-trip journey combines authentic steam power, breathtaking scenery, and a hearty lunch at historic Osier Station.

Chama Limited Highlights

Authentic Steam Railroading
Travel behind a historic coal-fired steam locomotive as it works hard through forests, valleys, and mountain passes along one of America’s most legendary narrow-gauge railroads. Hear the whistle echo through the canyon walls and feel the power of living railroad history beneath your feet.

Journey to Historic Osier Station
Your adventure includes a stop at historic Osier Station, the midpoint of the railroad and home to our famous mountain lunch. Surrounded by remote alpine scenery, Osier offers a rare glimpse into the railroad’s rugged frontier past.

Wind through high-desert landscapes, dense pine forests, open meadows, and dramatic mountain terrain while climbing toward elevations above 10,000 feet. Keep an eye out for wildlife including elk, mule deer, hawks, and eagles.

Essential Details to Plan Your Journey

Arrival & Check-In

Please arrive at the Chama Depot at least 30 minutes prior to departure. This allows time for parking, check-in, and exploring the historic rail yard before boarding begins.

What to Wear & Bring

Mountain weather can change quickly, especially at elevations above 10,000 feet. We recommend bringing:

  • Layered Clothing: Temperatures can shift rapidly throughout the day, even during summer months.
  • Sun Protection: High-altitude sunshine can be intense. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and brimmed hats are strongly recommended.
  • Comfortable Footwear: Closed-toe shoes are encouraged when walking through the rail yard and moving between train cars.
  • Eye Protection: Guests spending time in the Open-Air Gondola should wear sunglasses or clear protective eyewear to guard against coal cinders.
  • Camera or Smartphone: From towering mountain vistas to authentic steam action, this is one of the most photogenic train rides in the Southwest.
  • Bug Spray: Mountain mosquitoes and other insects are common during portions of the summer season.

Modifications: Changes may be made until the day prior to departure for a $6 fee per ticket. Booking errors reported within 48 hours of purchase are exempt from modification fees.
