Arrive at the Antonito Depot to check in and get your commemorative tickets.
10:00 AM – 10:45 AM: Depot Immersion
Explore the historic grounds and visit the historic photo display. Watch Engine 168 (built in 1883) take on water and build steam. This is the perfect time for photos of the locomotive before the crowd gathers.
~10:45 AM: Welcome Ceremony
Hear special remarks from visiting Colorado State Commissioners and a brief dedication to the next 150 years of the Centennial State.
10:55 AM: Boarding Call
Find your assigned car. History Ambassadors will be on hand to assist with seating.
Itinerary 1: Friday & Sunday (The High Plains Loop)
11:00 AM: Depart Antonito Depot.
11:30 AM: Cross the Ferguson Trestle and climb onto the lava mesa.
12:30 PM: Big Horn Section House. The train stops at this remote, historic outpost for a scenic turnaround.
1:15 PM: Departure from Big Horn, heading back toward the San Luis Valley.
2:30 PM: Return to Antonito. Arrive back at the depot with plenty of time to explore the town or visit the nearby historic sites.
Itinerary 2: Saturday (Statehood Day Doubleheader)
11:00 AM: Departure. A rare power display as Engines 168 & 463 double-head out of the yard.
12:15 PM: Pass through Sublette, NM and arrive at a water stop for the locomotives. This is a great opportunity to watch the crew work the antique steam technology.
1:30 PM: Arrive at Osier Station and enjoy a delicious mountain buffet lunch at 9,637 feet.
4:45 PM: Return to Antonito, a triumphant arrival back in the San Luis Valley to conclude the official Statehood Day journey.
Layered Clothing: Mountain weather changes rapidly; even in July, a light jacket is recommended.
Eye Protection: Sunglasses or safety glasses are essential to protect against occasional coal cinders from the locomotive.
Sturdy Shoes: For safety on the train and when exploring the depots, please wear closed-toe, sturdy footwear.
Sun Protection: High-altitude sun is intense. Bring sunscreen and use your commemorative event hat!
Camera/Binoculars: To capture “The View From Here” and spot local wildlife like elk, eagles, and bighorn sheep.
