Experience one of narrow-gauge railroading’s most distinctive historic vehicles on one of America’s most spectacular railroad journeys. For just six days this fall, Galloping Goose No. 5 returns to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad for a series of limited excursions through the mountains of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.
Originally built for the Rio Grande Southern Railroad in 1933, Galloping Goose No. 5 is unlike anything on our regular passenger trains. This historic self-propelled railcar offers a smaller, more intimate way to experience the railroad, bringing you closer to the track, the landscape and the remarkable engineering of the narrow-gauge line.
Choose a full 64-mile journey between Chama and Antonito or a round-trip excursion from Chama to Osier Station. Along the way, travel through high mountain passes, deep canyons, tunnels, trestles, forests and wide-open Western landscapes as the Goose follows the historic railroad across the Colorado–New Mexico border.
For railroad enthusiasts, photographers, history lovers and returning Cumbres & Toltec riders looking for an entirely different experience, this is one of the most unusual ways to explore the railroad. With only six departures scheduled, opportunities to ride Galloping Goose No. 5 on the Cumbres & Toltec are limited.
Travel the entire Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad eastbound from Chama, New Mexico, to Antonito, Colorado. Galloping Goose No. 5 stays ahead of the day’s passenger trains, with a special opportunity to watch the westbound steam train pass at Toltec siding. A scenic motorcoach returns guests to Chama following the rail journey.
Begin your day with a scenic motorcoach ride from Chama to Antonito, then board Galloping Goose No. 5 for a westbound journey over the full 64-mile railroad. Watch the landscape transform from the open high desert around Antonito to rugged canyons, forests and the high country surrounding Cumbres Pass before descending into Chama.
Enjoy a round-trip journey from Chama to remote Osier Station and back aboard the Galloping Goose. This itinerary showcases the dramatic western side of the railroad, including the climb from the Chama Valley toward 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass and the remote mountain railroad country beyond.
All times other than scheduled departure and motorcoach times are approximate. Railroad operations, weather, photo stops, train meets and other conditions may affect the itinerary or return time.
There are no conventional Coach, Deluxe or Parlor cars on this excursion — Galloping Goose No. 5 is the experience.
Built for the Rio Grande Southern Railroad, this unusual self-propelled narrow-gauge motorcar combines automotive heritage with railroad engineering in a way unlike a traditional passenger train. Its compact size creates an intimate ride and a much closer connection to the railroad as the Goose travels through curves, tunnels, trestles and mountain grades under its own power.
Seating and interior space are more compact than aboard our standard passenger cars, reflecting the historic character of the equipment. Guests should expect a distinctly different experience from a regular Cumbres & Toltec excursion.
Restroom Facilities: Galloping Goose No. 5 does not have onboard restroom facilities. Restrooms are available during the scheduled stop at Osier Station, so please plan accordingly before departure.
Historic railroad equipment has steps, narrow passageways and limited accessibility. Guests should follow crew instructions when boarding, exiting or moving around the Galloping Goose.
Please arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.
October weather in the mountains can change quickly. Temperatures may vary considerably between Chama, Antonito, Osier Station and Cumbres Pass, and morning conditions can be especially cold. Dressing in layers is strongly recommended.
Guests with mobility concerns or other accessibility needs should contact us before booking. Our reservations team can discuss boarding procedures, available accommodations and the movement required between the train and Osier Station. Not all historic railroad equipment or areas of Osier Station offer the same level of accessibility, so advance coordination is strongly recommended.
