Climb aboard the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad for an unforgettable night under one of the darkest skies in the world. Departing from the historic Chama Station, the Dark Sky Train winds through the steep grades and lush alpine forests of the San Juan Mountains — a region renowned for its crisp, high-altitude air and total lack of light pollution.
Bring your camera, telescope, or binoculars, and prepare for a night of awe and discovery. Local astronomers and guides may be on hand to help you navigate the stars, while the remote mountain wilderness creates the perfect, silent backdrop for stargazing.
Golden Hour Departure: Your journey begins as the sun begins its descent, casting long, golden shadows across the mountain peaks and through the tall stands of aspen and pine.
Sunset at Tanglefoot Curve: We’ll climb toward the heavens, stopping at the legendary Tanglefoot Curve. Here, the tracks double back on themselves to gain elevation, offering a dramatic vantage point to watch the sky transition through a palette of fiery oranges and deep purples over the vast New Mexico wilderness below.
Celestial Revelation: Once total darkness falls, the train reaches a pristine “dark sky” zone. With the engines hushed, the Milky Way emerges with such vividness it feels close enough to touch. Our crew and local guides will help point out seasonal constellations, planets, and distant nebulae.
Whether you’re a seasoned astrophotographer or simply love the night sky, the Dark Sky Train offers a rare and magical experience — where the rails meet the stars.
All aboard for a night you’ll never forget!
Round-Trip Steam Journey: Experience the nostalgia of narrow-gauge rail travel under the cover of night.
Onboard Concessions: The concession car remains open throughout the trip, offering light refreshments, snacks, and beverages for purchase.
Expert Narrators: Enjoy insights into the history of the line and the science of the stars from our knowledgeable staff.
Stargazing Time: Ample time off the train to set up equipment or simply sit back and soak in the silence of the wilderness.
Step into an evening of adventure and awe aboard the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad’s Dark Sky Train. Here’s what to expect on this unforgettable journey:
🕡 Depart from Chama Station
Departure times shift earlier as the season progresses to align with the setting sun, ensuring you arrive at our stargazing locations exactly as twilight fades into total darkness. Climb aboard our historic train and settle in for a scenic climb through the lush mountain passes of Northern New Mexico.
🍿 Concession Car Open
Enjoy a variety of snacks and refreshments available for purchase onboard. Relax and take in the views from the comfort of your seat or mingle in the concession car as we wind our way into the high-alpine wilderness.
🌄 Sunset at Tanglefoot Curve
Arrive at the famous Tanglefoot Curve, a dramatic horseshoe bend that offers sweeping views of the valley below. Step off the train at this iconic location to witness a breathtaking mountain sunset from one of the most storied spots on the entire Cumbres & Toltec line.
🌌 Stargazing Under Pristine Skies
As darkness falls, prepare to be amazed. The high altitude and remote location make this one of the darkest places on Earth, offering unparalleled views of the night sky. Bring your camera, telescope, or binoculars to fully enjoy the constellations, planets, and Milky Way overhead.
🚂 Return to Chama Station
After a peaceful and magical evening under the stars, reboard the train for a quiet ride back down the mountain, arriving approximately 4.5 to 5 hours after departing.
Warm Layers or Heavy Jacket: The mountain air cools rapidly after sunset. Even in summer, temperatures at this altitude can be quite chilly.
Sturdy, Closed-Toe Shoes: This is a true wilderness stop. You will be stepping off the train onto sloped mountain terrain and ballast (large rocks); sturdy footwear is essential for your safety.
Camera or Smartphone: Capture the high-altitude sunset, the steam locomotive, and the brilliant stars.
Compact Gear: Because we are stopping on a historic mountain curve, space for tripods may be more limited than at a station. We recommend portable, easy-to-carry equipment.
Flashlight or Headlamp (Red Light Preferred): Helps you navigate the mountain stop safely without disrupting your eyes’ natural “night vision.”
Telescope or Binoculars: While the stars are brilliant to the naked eye, these are perfect for a closer look at deep-sky objects.
Blanket or Camp Chair: To stay cozy and comfortable while you enjoy the peaceful surroundings at the pass.
Snacks & Water: While the Concession Car is stocked with treats, feel free to bring your own mountain-side refreshments.
Curiosity & Wonder: Be ready to experience the cosmos from the top of the world!
