Historic Steam Railroad Currently Offers Departures from Antonito; Departures from Chama to Begin on Sept. 21, 2020

CHAMA, NM and ANTONITO, CO, SEPTEMBER 4, 2020….Thanks to yesterday’s announcement that quarantine restrictions have been lifted, New Mexico residents can now travel to low risk states like Colorado. This is big news for the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (C&TSRR) which is jointly owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico and runs between Antonito, Colo and Chama, NM. Currently running out of Antonito, the C&TSRR will begin departures from Chama, NM on September 21, 2020.

“We encourage New Mexico residents to escape the heat this Labor Day Weekend with an adventurous ride on the nation’s most scenic train,” said John Bush, president of the C&TSRR. “And make your fall reservations now. Fall colors are just starting to turn, and the Cumbres & Toltec is particularly gorgeous steaming past thousands of colorful aspen trees.”

New Mexico residents are now allowed to cross the border and board the train in Antonito, Colo., only a half-hour from Taos, NM.  There are departures six days a week, Mon. – Sat. from Antonito. Beginning September 21, 2020, trains will depart from Chama, NM. More details and schedules to be announced soon.

“This year has been very difficult for everyone; the employees, the rail fans, and most of all the people of Chama who rely on the train for their livelihoods,” noted Bush. “We are hopeful we can finish the year strong as fall is usually our most popular season.”

This year, passengers can even book a private rail car, which due to social distancing regulations, are more attainable than ever before. Private cars are available on a limited basis and must be booked by calling the Depot at 1-888-286-2737 (no online sales).

All passengers must wear masks and have their temperature checked before boarding the train. There is extra room to spread out and social distance, all the train windows open to let in the fresh Rocky Mountain air, and extra open air gondola cars are added to every train. Reservations are required.
