Ride from Antonito to Cumbres Pass by steam train!

Travel one way from Antonito, Colorado to Cumbres Pass on a scenic steam train journey through some of the most dramatic landscapes on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. This 4 hour, 45 minute excursion carries you through the wide-open San Luis Valley into rugged canyon country, past historic tunnels, striking rock formations, and the unforgettable views of Toltec Gorge.

Along the way, you’ll stop at Osier Station — the scenic mid-point of the C&TS line — for a hot lunch before continuing by train to Cumbres Pass, the highest point on the railroad at 10,015 feet.

This ride is a great choice for tour groups, private groups, and guests who have arranged their own pickup at Cumbres Pass.

Important Transportation Note: This is a one-way train ride. This option does not include a return train trip or motorcoach transportation. Pickup or transportation from Cumbres Pass is the responsibility of the guest.

Please note: Coaches are not heated. Mountain weather can change quickly, so layered clothing is strongly recommended.

Itinerary

  • 10:00 AM: Depart Antonito Depot by train
  • 12:45 PM: Arrive at Osier Station
  • 12:45 PM – 1:45 PM: Enjoy hot lunch at scenic Osier Station
  • 1:45 PM: Reboard the train and continue toward Cumbres Pass
  • 2:45 PM: Arrive at Cumbres Pass

Train Car Information

Parlor Observation Car

Experience the railroad in our most elevated class of service. The Parlor Observation Car offers lounge-style seating, panoramic windows, attentive onboard service, complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, snacks, souvenirs, and access to the private rear observation platform.

Parlor Observation accommodates adults only, ages 21 and over. Beer, wine, and cocktails are available for purchase with valid ID.

Deluxe Car

Upgrade your journey with our family-friendly Deluxe Class experience. Deluxe cars feature café-style table seating for two or four guests, extra room, individual seating, and the service of a dedicated attendant.

Guests in Deluxe Class enjoy complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, snacks, and full access to the Open-Air Gondola. Deluxe Class is available to passengers of all ages and is ideal for guests who want added comfort while still enjoying the sights, sounds, and history of the railroad.

Coach Car

Enjoy an authentic narrow-gauge steam train experience in our comfortable Coach cars. Coach seating features padded bench-style seats, windows that open to the fresh mountain air, and access to the Open-Air Gondola.

Coach is a great option for families, groups, railfans, photographers, and guests looking for a classic Cumbres & Toltec experience at a budget-friendly price.

Snacks and beverages are available for purchase in the concession car.

Coaches are not heated, so please dress in layers.

Open-Air Gondola

Available to all ticketed passengers, the Open-Air Gondola is one of the best places to experience the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Enjoy unobstructed views, fresh mountain air, excellent photo opportunities, and the sights and sounds of a historic steam locomotive at work.

Eye protection is strongly recommended while riding in the gondola, as coal cinders may occasionally be present.

Allow extra time for parking, restroom use, ticketing questions, and boarding. The train departs promptly, and late arrivals may not be accommodated.

Transportation Reminder: This is a one-way ride ending at Cumbres Pass. Guests are responsible for arranging their own pickup or transportation from Cumbres Pass.

What To Bring

Prepare for Mountain Weather

Layered clothing: Weather can change quickly along the route. Even on warm days, temperatures may feel cooler at elevation, especially near Cumbres Pass. Coaches are not heated, so a jacket or windbreaker is recommended.

Sun protection: Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a brimmed hat or ball cap. The sun is stronger at high elevation.

Insect repellent: Bug spray is recommended, especially during warmer months.

Ride Comfort & Safety

Sturdy, closed-toe shoes: Recommended for walking around the depot, moving between cars, boarding or exiting the train, and safely navigating Cumbres Pass at the end of your ride.

Eye protection: Sunglasses, prescription glasses, or safety glasses are recommended for time spent in the Open-Air Gondola.

Camera or phone: This route offers excellent photo opportunities, including high desert landscapes, tunnels, rock formations, canyon views, and mountain scenery.

Pickup plan: Because this is a one-way train ride, please confirm your transportation or pickup arrangements from Cumbres Pass before your departure.
