Our open-air observation platform provides 360-degree, unobstructed views of the Rio Grande Rift and the San Juan Volcanic Field. It is the premier spot for photography and wildlife viewing. Throughout the journey, friendly and informative docents will be available in the Gondola to provide live commentary on the “Authentic West” as it was 140+ years ago — and as it is today.

Your Comfortable Home Base.
Enjoy a budget-friendly ride with the nostalgic charm of the high country. Our classic Coach cars feature comfortable padded bench seating and large windows that open to the fresh Rocky Mountain air.

Accessibility: Feel free to move between your assigned Coach seat and the Open-Air Gondola throughout the trip.

Concessions: Snacks and beverages are available for purchase in our concession car.

Important Note: Coaches are not heated. Please dress in layers to ensure your comfort as we traverse high-altitude passes.

Please arrive 30 minutes before departure.

Layered Clothing: Mountain weather changes rapidly. Even in August, temperatures can drop significantly at Cumbres Pass. Coaches are not heated, so please bring a jacket or windbreaker.

Sun Protection: The sun is much stronger at 10,000 feet. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a brimmed hat or ball cap.

Insect Repellent: We recommend bug spray, as mosquitoes can occasionally join the ride during certain stretches of the route.

Sturdy, Closed-Toe Shoes: This is essential for your safety when moving between cars, walking in the rail yard, and stepping off the train onto uneven terrain at geologic outcroppings.

Eye Protection: If you plan to spend time in the Open-Air Gondola, eye protection is highly recommended to shield against coal cinders from the steam locomotive. Sunglasses or prescription glasses work well; safety glasses are also available for purchase in our gift shop.

Camera & Binoculars: Don’t miss the chance to capture rare volcanic formations and local wildlife.

Note-Taking Gear: A notebook or tablet is handy for jotting down insights from our expert geologists to accompany your provided rail log.

Passengers can make changes to their reservations up to the day before their ride. Change fee is $6 per ticket. If there is an error during the original booking, customers must call the reservation office within 2 days of the reservation to avoid being charged the change fee.

Cancellations made 48 hours prior to the trip date are refundable minus Service Fees with a cancellation fee of $18 per adult ticket and $9 per child ticket. Cancellations made after the 48 hour deadline are non-refundable. All Fares Are Subject To A 7% Non-Refundable Historical Preservation Fee. Purchases made through 3rd Party or Discount companies or websites are NON-Refundable and the above cancellation policy does not apply.
