The Dark Sky Train is an immersive passage into one of the last remaining frontiers of true darkness. As the steam locomotive chuffs through remote territory inaccessible by car, you’ll leave the modern world—and its light pollution—far behind.
Your journey begins as the sun begins its descent, casting long, golden shadows across the sagebrush or mountain pines. We pause at remote, historic locations (Big Horn or Tanglefoot Curve) to witness the sky transition through a palette of fiery oranges and deep purples.
Once total darkness falls, the train enters a “dark sky” zone. With the engines hushed, the Milky Way emerges with such vividness it feels close enough to touch. Our crew and local guides help point out seasonal constellations, planets, and distant nebulae.
Not at all! The skies at Big Horn and Tanglefoot are so dark that the Milky Way is clearly visible to the naked eye. However, you are more than welcome to bring your own binoculars or telescopes for a closer look.
It takes about 20–30 minutes for human eyes to fully adjust to the dark. Standard white flashlights or bright phone screens instantly reset that “night vision.” Red light allows you to see your path without disrupting your ability—or your neighbor’s ability—to see the stars.
Yes! Our Concession Car is open throughout the journey, offering a variety of snacks, light refreshments, and hot/cold beverages for purchase. You are also welcome to bring your own small snacks and water.
The Dark Sky Train will run rain or shine. While we cannot guarantee crystal-clear skies, a night in the wilderness aboard a historic steam train is a magical experience regardless of the weather. Refunds are not provided for cloud cover.
Yes, we have an accessible car available. Please call our ticket office at 888-286-2737 in advance so we can ensure proper boarding assistance and seating for your specific departure.
