Make a clean escape.
There are hints of gold showing in the high Rocky Mountains, heralding the impending arrival of glorious fall colors. Step aboard the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (C&TSRR) for a trip back in time to the 19th century, where steam railroads at 12 mph were the state-of-the-art fastest way to travel and there were no cell phones or automobile roads. There were, however, mountainsides of brilliant aspens and the Cumbres & Toltec still steams through them, just as it has for 140 years.
Voted for the third consecutive time by the readers of USA Today as the nation’s “most scenic train,” the Cumbres & Toltec is a National Historic Landmark that moves – a completely authentic steam railroad ride through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico. The nation’s most scenic train is particularly gorgeous in the fall as it steams past thousands of colorful aspen trees.
Come feel the rails underneath. Listen to the bright steam whistle, and leave all your worries behind.
Become a part of history.
Climb aboard our National Historic Landmark for a 64-mile day trip you’ll never forget. Our coal-fired steam engine carries you through steep mountain canyons, high desert, and lush meadows as you zig-zag between the Colorado and New Mexico border. Open your eyes to spectacular and rare Western scenery which can only be viewed from our train’s unique route. Ride in the Victorian elegance in our Parlor and Deluxe cars or choose the budget-friendly Coach car. Either way, a delicious lunch is included.
Our railroad has steamed through history and across the Rocky Mountains since 1880, when first tracks were laid across Cumbres Pass. In 2021, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our co-ownership by the states of Colorado and New Mexico. This is your chance to make history with us. To experience going back in time and off of the grid. To experience the sounds, steam and steel, and the grit that made this country great. Your daily grind can’t follow you into the great, unspoiled West.
Be a part of history.
Be a Fireman or Engineer on a real coal-fired, steam locomotive that has run on the C&TSRR since the 1920’s. Exclusive to the C&TSRR is the four-day Fireman and Engineer School that gives you the real-life experience of shoveling coal in the firebox or pulling on the throttle.
