The Geology Train Experience

Exclusive Access to the Right-of-Way

Unlike our standard daily trips, the Geology Train makes frequent stops at remote outcroppings and rail cuts along the tracks. These unique geologic sites are only accessible by rail.

Passengers are invited to disembark, mingle with experts, and photograph rare formations — including metamorphic rock as old as that found at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Each participant will receive a comprehensive, mile-by-mile Geologic Rail Log to follow along as we trace the deep history of the Rocky Mountain West.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a professional geologist to attend?

Not at all! While the trip is led by distinguished professionals, the commentary is designed to be accessible and engaging for everyone, from curious hobbyists and “rock hounds” to practicing geologists.

Is there a lot of walking or hiking involved?

The train will make several stops at unique outcroppings and rail cuts. These stops allow passengers to disembark and examine the rock formations up close. While the walking is minimal and localized to the trackside, the ground can be uneven. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required for your safety.

What is the “Geologic Rail Log”?

Every passenger receives a mile-by-mile guide to the route. This log identifies specific formations, faults, and volcanic deposits as you pass them, allowing you to follow along with the experts in real-time.

What if I have dietary restrictions for the included lunch?

Lunch is served at the historic Osier Station. We offer a variety of options, including vegetarian and gluten-free choices. If you have specific, severe allergies, please notify us at the time of booking or contact our ticket office.
