  • San Juan & New Mexico Express For train buffs around the world, this is an unprecedented historic railroading experience.  Historic 1883 steam locomotive No. 168 will pull a train of all authentic 19th century Denver & Rio Grande cars on the exact same tracks across the Rocky Mountains that it originally did from 1883-1938. What is truly remarkable is that engine No. 168 sat outside in Antlers Park, Colorado Springs for 75 years. The engine was completely exposed to the elements of snow, hail and rain.  It has been completely restored to its original 1883 brilliant appearance and is one of only two locomotives of its class left in the world.  These special excursions from Antonito will be “bucket list” trips with an historic locomotive and historic cars and are limited to just 60 people.  Departures are scheduled for one Sunday each month – June 27, July 25, August 15, Sept. 19, Oct. 24. The train will depart Antonito at 10 a.m., traveling to Osier Station for a delicious lunch and return to Antonito at 4:40 p.m. This trip will sell out quickly so make reservations!

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is “The Best Train Ride in America”  …  USA Today 10Best

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the highest, longest and best preserved steam railroad in America, voted by the readers of USA Today in 2020, 2019 and 2017 to be the most scenic train ride in the nation.  The historic steam train follows the original 64-miles of tracks first laid down in 1880, crossing the borders of Colorado and New Mexico 11 times, as it skirts along canyon walls through Toltec Gorge, burrows through tunnels, steams over Cascade Trestle (137-feet above a roaring river), and climbs to the top of 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass, the highest point reached by any steam railroad in North America.

The railroad has been featured in more than 40 motion pictures, including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The railroad also has the country’s largest collection of narrow gauge locomotives and cars.

Traveling on the train provides the most authentic look at steam railroading in the 1880s.  In 2021, passengers must wear masks, however they can still move between cars, ride outdoors on a gondola car, listen to a steam whistle echo down a canyon, enjoy mile after mile of aspen and conifer forest, see wildlife such as elk, deer and sometimes even bear from their seats, or visit the bar and snack car — all at a pleasant top speed of 12 mph.
